Thank you for your comment. I think declaring the case solved is probably ok. Traditionally the case is referred to as solved when the police have enough crime to make the arrest.

I think the larger point is there remains a difference between solved from police definition and a conviction in criminal court.

Based on your point, my future post will probably use a different choice of words.

This was a good post, and very true. As a now 45 year old field guy, I can remember when 4-5 talented, “Floor walking” detectives would grab 80 shoplifters a week, with no cameras at all!!! I also recall supervising newer, (less then 30 year old) detectives that had 100 cameras, two way radios, lookouts, coops, two way mirrors and other tools and a dozen detectives could not grab 80 shoplifters a week……..so which technology was better???? I think the old timers had to work harder and get more creative to make the same cases that CCTV give up today!!!

My cameras were the size of a mailbox, and my first VCR was reel to reel. Before that, I had cameras with no recorder. Before that, nothing but coops (as one retail LP prophet proclaimed, ‘the future of retail loss prevention’).

Color DVRs, with remote access? I would have thought I’d see flying cars first.

PAUL, THANK YOU FOR MAKING A VERY VALID POINT THAT I HAVE PREVIOUSLY PASSED ON TO FRIENDS IN OUR INDUSTRY. SALES ARE DOWN, PROFITS ARE DOWN, MARGINS ARE SHRINKING AND MANY VERY GOOD LP PROFESSIONALS ARE OUT OF WORK. THE SKILL SET A GOOD LP PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPS IS TRANSPORTABLE BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF LP. WE ALL NEED TO HELP OUR NEXT GENERATION GROW. AS WE ALL KNOW MOST JOBS ARE BETTER FOUND BY WORD OF MOUTH AND CONTACT DIRECT WITH AN INDIVIDUAL BEFORE IT HITS THE JOB BOARDS AND WEB SITES. I HAVE BEEN IN PAUL’S SHOES TWICE IT IS NOT FUN, YOU FEEL DEPRESSED, REJECTED, AND BEAT YOURSELF UP FOR WHAT “YOU DID WRONG” , WHEN IN MANY CASES IT IS JUST A BOTTOM LINE DECISION AND WE HAVE TO LEARN TO WORK WITH SMALLER STAFFS AND DO MORE WORK. Nice note Paul. Feel free to direct folks my way if they’d like some coaching. I’m also doing outplacement/transition work with two colleagues – Joe Eastman Associates. We break the rule about being able to get only two out of better, faster, cheaper. We deliver on all of those at the same time.
